It’s clear that this story is supposed to be symbolic of people sending their children to distant lands for a better quality of life. The director is Korean-American and would have likely had parents/grand-parents that would have sacrificed a lot just to ensure their young a better life in America. The drifting rocks are symbolic of the dangerous war that plagued Korea many years ago.
